This advanced three-day clinic is designed to give skills for moving beyond the crag and onto longer or more remote ice climbs. Participants will have the opportunity to climb backcountry ice, practice efficient movement, and learn techniques for anchor-building, technical descending, and strategies for longer days in the mountains. This includes one day in the park, one day in-classroom, and one day in the backcountry.

Suggested experience: Experience rock and ice climbing. Multi-pitch experience (rock or ice) is strongly recommended.

9:00am-12:00pm, Optional afternoon practice: 1-3:30pm

This indoor half-day* clinic is focused on setting up top rope anchors for ice climbing, with a focus on bolt anchor stations, such as those in the Ouray Ice Park. We will also cover anchors using natural features like trees and placed protection, such as ice-screws. Participants should bring their harnesses and personal gear, and be prepared to get lots of practice setting up anchors using static lines and other anchoring materials.

*Optional afternoon session: For those who are interested, there is an optional afternoon practice session at the crag, 1-3:30 pm. You will need a helmet and crampons to participate in this session.

Suggested experience: No ice climbing experience required. Some prior anchor-building experience (rock or ice) recommended.

This is a ground school clinic with an optional afternoon practice session in the ice park.
